The Myth of Racist Kids – anti-racist policy and the regulation of school life

The Myth of Racist Kids

Why I wrote this report.

Adrian Hart - Posted: February 2010.

Arian HartCritics have described my report as "attacking anti-racism" hoping that this phrase alone will act as a suitable condemnation of whatever it is that I might have to say.  One critical review, perhaps sensing that in primary schools (the focus of my report) there may well be a few problems associated with how we 'do' anti-racism, reminded its readers that the report is "downright dangerous" and not merely "esoteric, polemical posing about childhood innocence ...".  (Its dangerous, by the way, because an anti-racist attacking official anti-racism in schools will be relished by the right-wing press - better to keep this kind of thing hush, hush).

If you adhere to the view that criticising anti-racism is a kind of modern-day liberal heresy I'd still urge you to read the report. You could keep it hidden (and obviously don't tell anyone).  If you do read The Myth of Racist Kids, whether you agree with its content or not, you'll quickly see why I felt compelled to write it.  For the benefit of this site I summarise the experiences that motivated the report below.
